The AVID program is designed to meet the needs of students
who are academically “in the middle”, having a 2.0 to 3.5 GPA, and are
typically underrepresented in higher education. AVID prepares students
to enter a 4-year university upon graduation from high school by
enrolling them in rigorous coursework while providing the support
necessary to achieve academic success. Serving roughly 10% of the Kranz
population, AVID teaches skills and strategies that assist students in
becoming confident and independent learners, as well as critical
thinkers.
AVID students receive weekly instruction in
reading, writing and study skills, as well as organization and time
management. Additionally, they take part in small group tutorials, which
allow them to work collaboratively to solve problems and further their
higher-order thinking. Monthly guest speakers give students insight into
a variety of professions they may enter as adults, including medicine,
law, education, law enforcement, and business. Quarterly field trips
serve to expose them to university life, while expanding their
world-view. Most importantly, AVID students are provided an environment
in which they receive continuous support from both teachers and peers.
